[The video is fairly dark and there is some rustling as the screen moves around, illuminating the walls and the floor one by one. Finally it illuminates unown letters carved into the floor reading "LIGHT". There's a rumble and a door opens to let her back up to the first room.

She begins to walk to the door as she turns the pokègear to face herself.]

Oh! I didn't mean to record that!

These ruins are fun, but the unown that keep popping up are startling. But I have two pokèmon other than just Cassius to protect me now!

[She picks up an espurr, and a ghastly joins behind them as Mary stands up again.] This is Verity the espurr and Drogo the ghastly!

I've been wondering what other people consider when deciding to catch a pokèmon or not. Would anyone mind telling me?

I haven't caught very many Pokemon myself, actually...but that's probably because I breed them, mostly. Or I purchase an egg if I find one that could fit well with the other Pokemon I already have...

Actually, now that I think about it...I've only ever caught one of my Pokemon. My Rotom, John. I suppose I ended up capturing him because I had been curious about the Pokemon to begin with, and wanted to see one in person...a friend of mine that used to be here owned one.

It's a dual type Pokemon, ghost and electric. They like to live in electronics like Porygon, only they're a bit different in that they seem to prefer appliances. Things like televisions and toasters and such.

I don't know what a television is, but I am guessing a toaster is an electric device that toasts things. It's amazing that pokèmon could live in that. Could one be in my pokègear?

That's exactly what a toaster does, actually.

And...well, if you had a Rotom living in your Gear, you would probably know it. John likes to play tricks sometimes, and most I'm sure are no different from mine.

[Oh, hey, it's this girl again. Or at least it's pretty definitely her ID, they'd last met over text. Seems she's doing all right, at least; might as well answer her.]

There's nothing too specific about it. If I see them and I like them, I catch them and that's it. I like birds and cute stuff, so I catch birds and cute stuff and sometimes if I'm lucky they overlap.

Pidgy are cute, but they keep flying away before I can catch one. Why do you like birds?

Because you can fly on them, that's why. I like being up in the air like that, I can't stand being restricted to the ground.

I'm trying to train my pokèmon so that we can fight the gym leaders so we can use fly too! I don't have a flying pokèmon yet though.

Altarias are good. They're dragons, too, so they're pretty powerful.

That's an excellent question. I have three Pokémon myself, and I haven't caught any of them. I had the Pokémon I started with of course, and the other two I received from very kind breeders. It's a little strange for me thinking about catching Pokémon. I'm still not sure how I feel about battling in general, really, even if my Pokémon don't mind.

I've decided that if my pokèmon want to battle, it is my job as a trainer to make sure that they're strong enough to win without getting too hurt. I'm still not sure how wild pokèmon go from attacking us to being our allies. I wish I could speak with them.

I catch a lot of different types. If they're cute and strong, I get them. Though I got a lot of Pokémon from eggs and when friends left.

It seems that a lot of people get them from eggs! I suppose if I saw a pokèmon I liked I would ask for an egg too.

Well! That's an interesting way of looking at things! I have been training them...but maybe I've been spoiling them too much?

Hmm...I hadn't thought about wild Pokémon in too much depth, but you're right! I wonder if it has something to do with the Pokeball? Or maybe it's seeing the trust between a Pokémon and it's trainer in person? That's something to look into, for sure!

Maybe. I think it might be something about developing respect for you if you can manage to catch it, but that's just a guess. Drogo kept teasing me until I managed to catch him, but ever since he's only played tricks on other pokèmon.

That could very well be it. I really ought to invent some sort of device that allows us to speak to our Pokémon. That would make all this much easier. [He frowns. He's not sure if that's beyond his capabilities, but he's not one to give up on a task so easily.]

Interesting! So once you caught him, he had more respect for you! That does seem to coincide with your theory!

Are you a scientist? It would really be impressive if you could manage that. I'm sure it would become very popular!

Aa. Mostly been training out in the wild. Never thought of catching 'em.

[ A pause to think though. ]

[Mary thinks as well,] Well, the pokèmon start out stronger from the wilderness, but hatched pokèmon seem to trust you more quickly. I guess you can train them more carefully so they can be stronger than a wild pokèmon, but I don't think it would make much of a difference.
